Iron has many functions in the body like immune enhancing, anticarcinogenic and also enhancement of cognition. Iron is the component of haemoglobin it helps to carry oxygen to the different parts of the body by red blood cells.
There are certain drugs that reduces the level of folic acid in the blood such as carbamazepine, phenytoin or barbiturates.
As, inadequate level of folate causes cardiovascular events, megaloblastic anemia and cognitive impairment.
It treats the neurological disorders.

Ferrous supplements are used to maintain the low levels of iron in the body. It also improves the absorption of iron in the body.
Folic Acid is known as vitamin B9. It acts as cofactor for the synthesis of dNA and rNA synthesis. Also, it is essential for the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines
It is good in cell division, erythropoiesis and in pregnancy

  • Megaloblastic anaemia
  • In pregnancy
  • Folic acid deficiency

Mechanism of Action-

Ferrous:As the deficiency of iron leads to decreased production of haemoglobin, microcytic anemia so ferrous ascorbate helps to increase the iron in the body.
Folic acid is reduced to dihydrofolate and tetrahydrofolate with the help of tetrahydrofolate reductase which is required for amino acids and nucleic acid synthesis
Folic acid causes remethylation of the homocysteine with the help of methionine synthetase.

Pharmacokinetics-

Ferrous:It is absorbed in the salt form.
Folic Acid:
It is absorbed from small intestine
It is highly bound to proteins
It is metabolized in the liver
It is excreted via urine
  • Diarrhoea
  • Upset stomach
  • Cramps in stomach

  • Change in colour of stools
  • Contraindicated in patients with haemolytic anemia
  • Contraindicated in hemochromatosis
